Red Oak
Quercus rubra
A medium sized, deciduous tree with a rounded to broad-spreading, often irregular crown.
Rapidly grows compared to other oaks. Typically gets to be at a height of 60 to 70 feet. Trunk diameter is about 2 - 3 ft in diameter.
Like many other oaks, it takes 20 - 25 years for a tree to start producing acorns. Similar looking acorns to white oaks, but longer in diameter (less round).
7 - 11 lobes, the margins of the lobes are u-shaped and the tips of the lobes are bristle tipped.
Bark is typically a dark reddish gray brown, and is scaly with broad, thin, rounded ridges. The ridges tend to have shiny stripes running down the center.
A mature red oak has bark that has warts and ridges but when younger, it is silvery gray and smooth.
