Tulip Tree

Liriodendron

Deciduous over most of their populations and in the magnolia family found in eastern North America.

  • Can grow to 70 - 90 feet with a trunk diameter of about 4 - 6 ft.

  • Blooms in May and June, producing tulip-shaped flowers 1½–2" in diameter with greenish-yellow petals and a splash of orange at the base.

  • The leaves are very distinctive, having four lobes in most cases and a cross-cut notched or straight apex.

  • The bark is gray to brown, with rounded ridges and long, deep grooves.

  • Fun fact: The tulip tree does not begin to bloom until it’s 15 - 20 years old.
