Spencer Woods Wildlife Preserve

In 1980 Spencer Montgomery offered to sell this property to the Town of Suffield. The town officials felt that this watershed to Sunrise Park was a desirable property and brought the purchase to a town meeting. The purchase was voted down and this defeat precipitated the formation of the Suffield Land Conservancy which was incorporated in September, 1980. Under their sponsorship, the property was purchased in December, 1980 with an interest free loan from the Connecticut Watershed Council for $45,000. Following a town wide drive for funds the loan was repaid and ownership was transferred to the Suffield Land Conservancy in 1981.

This 44.6 acre property begins on the south side of Phelps Road near the junction of Mountain Road and extends south to the border of Sunrise Park. From the north, access is via the Metacomet Trail which starts near the intersection of Phelps Road and Mountain Road. A conservancy sign marks the entrance. The trail winds up a steep grade onto a flat area where the Metacomet Trail continues southward. From the south, access is via the Deer Run Trail which branches westward up the ridge off the north end of the Austin Brook Trail that circles White’s Pond in Sunrise Park.

This area, along with the Alcorn properties, was part of the reforestation effort in 1997 brought on by the threat of the wooly adelgid. This included the harvesting of a large stand of hemlocks and replanting the area in 1998 with several dozen White Pine, Norway Spruce and Douglas Fir. About 1/2 mile from the Metacomet Trailhead, there are the remains of a 19th century cabin with adjacent bench and flowering dogwoods planted by local scouts.
