Pin Oak

Quercus palustris

A medium sized deciduous tree

  • A faster-growing red oak, height of 50 - 70 ft with 3 ft in trunk diameter.

  • Yields acorns that are neary round at about ½’’ long.

  • Leaves are 3 to 6 inches long, bristle tipped, deeply 5 to 7 lobed with U-shaped margins.

  • Mature bark is shallowly ridged and becomes smooth gray with few isolated ridges.

  • Member of the Red Oak group and Beech family. Known for its tolerance to wet conditions (hence its other common name “swamp Spanish oak”)

  • Vincent’s Forester Fun Fact: the name “Pin Oak” comes from its branchlets along the limbs and branches of the tree. It was commonly used as railroad ties due to the way pin oak warps, but nowadays it’s good firewood.
