Ironwood/ American Hornbeam

Carpinus caroliniana

A small hardwood tree native to the Eastern US and Canada.

  • Will grow 20 - 30 ft high with a trunk diameter of 1 foot.

  • Produces ¾-1¼ inches long acorns -  their cups look like saucers.

  • The leaves are egg- shaped to elliptical in outline, ¾ to 4¾ inches long, with doubly-serrated edges.

  • The bark is gray with heavily fluted muscle-like ridges.

  • The wood is very hard and dense, hence why it is often used for tool handles such as longbows, walking sticks, and golf clubs. Due to its strong bark, the tree is resistant to many pests and diseases.
