Black Cherry Tree

A deciduous tree or shrub of the genus Prunus.

  • A medium-sized, fast-growing forest tree growing to a height of 50–80 ft

  • Produces delicate lace-like flower blossoms in the summer. It bears a non-sweet berry looking fruit. 

  • Leaves are 2–5 in (5–13 cm) long, ovate-lanceolate in shape, with finely toothed margins. Fall leaf color is yellow to red.

  • The bark of the Black Cherry separates into square shaped scales, with prominent lenticels present.

  • Fun fact: Black cherry's wood is considered very valuable for its color; it is used for furniture, instruments, paneling, toys and handles.
